"...These pipe smoking contests are billed as "the slowest race in the world" and are held throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan. The world's first pipe smoking contest was held in the 18th century in the Oxford Theater in London. The winner received 12 shillings for first prize, but there is no record of his actual time. Today, pipe smoking contests are especially popular in Europe, where World Cup championships are held annually in various countries and hosted by local pipe clubs. Unlike many pipe smoking contests in the U.S., where cube cut Burley is often mandated, these annual European contests usually use a commercially blended tobacco of the hosting country or a sponsoring company. Thus, some rather spectacular times are possible. Yet using only Burley, the best U.S. time is 2 hours, 6 minutes and 39 seconds, established in 1975 by William Vargo of Swartz Creek, Michigan."
